Principal's Corner

Dear Students, Parents, and Staff:

It is with great pride and pleasure that I welcome you back to the 2018-2019 school year.  I am very excited to start my second year as the principal of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Middle School.  Last year has come and gone and this year will undoubtedly bring much success.  To ensure this success we will need the continued help and support of our entire school community.

The last few months have brought about many new changes and I am confident that these changes will enhance our school and bring it to a place of prominence, where it belongs.  MLK Jr. is coming off of a successful year, but we want to be better. This summer, my administrative team along with our school’s Instructional Leadership Team have been working diligently to ensure that we are moving in a direction that will allow your child to reach their fullest potential, becoming the leaders, educators and entrepreneurs that they are destined to be.

We come into this year with a renewed vigor.  The changes we have made are focused on our students and their long-term success.  High standards and high expectations will be the emphasis for every student. We hold these standards and expectations with pride and will ask each student to do the same. We are committed to providing our students with a safe and academically challenging environment where they will have the opportunity to be their best and achieve at the highest level.

With a new year comes some additions.  We have moved from a 7 period day to an A/B Block Schedule, allowing for more time in the classroom, increased instruction and a focus on content areas.  We have also added a Law and Public Safety class, taught by one of our new staff members, Ms. Myrna Velez, as well as Creative Writing and Digital Literacy.  We are looking to add an Allied Health and Engineering course that will provide students with opportunities to study about careers, and give them a glimpse of their future potential.

I look forward to the exciting challenges that are ahead of us. Let’s work together to build lasting relationships and provide each child with an enduring experience that will promote and enhance their unique talents and gifts.  Working alongside this incredible community, we can and will create a Model School for others to follow.

I look forward to having you partner with us on this journey to an incredible 2018-2019 school year.  Go Bishops!
